Defiance - C. J. Redwine - Opinião

Sinopsis

Rachel's world is confined to the protective walls around her city. Beyond them are violent wanderers, extreme terrain, and a danger straight out of legend: a beast called the Cursed One that devastates everything in its path. When Rachel's father goes missing, she is desperate to search for him. But her attempts to flee the city bring her to the attention of its overbearing ruler. His efforts to control her make the world within the walls seem as dangerous as that outside. Her only chance at escape is Logan. Once her father's apprentice, and now her only protector, he feels that helping her might mean losing her completely. But if he can put his feelings aside, they might be able to save more than Rachel's father. They might be able to break down the walls, and set their people free.

Opinion with some spoilers

In the city of Baalboden, Jared Adams is declared dead by the ruthless Commander, and Jared's daughter, Rachel, friend, Oliver, and apprentice, Logan, are gathered to the hearing of his will. In Jared's will, he left Logan to be Rachel's Protector, acting as a bodyguard for Rachel and never letting her out of his sight. However, Rachel and Logan don't believe that Jared is actually dead, and escape the walls of Baalboden to look for him.
Something was off with this book from the beginning.
It's a distopian book, in which after a big catastrophy, the remaining survivors live in walled cities rulled by a comander and it's army. They have to live inside the wall because of a beast, the Cursed One, that looks like a dragon by the description. We don't know why he exists, and how can he be so quickly in places described as days of distance. The romance between Logan and Rachel it's so obvious but so suden... Right in chapter one, we're provided with very clear indications that Rachel has a strong hatred towards Logan, ever since she confessed her love to him two years ago, and he rejected her. Then, after Logan was appointed as her Protector, basically made her move out of the comfort of her own house and into the discomfort of his, and just was an all around asshole towards her, she decided that she's, once again, in love with him. Then towards the end of the book, in the middle of a crisis she stops and thinks out of nowhere "I'm in love with Logan" then resumes what she was doing, and that's it! What??? Logan sometimes seems to care for Rachel but sometimes looks more obcessed with her, than in love with her.

The world building was lacking because we don't know exactly how things got that way, how the commander got to power, if the people like to live under is rule, only that Rachel and Logan don't.
It's a dual POV, one from Rachel and other from Logan and that helps the reader to get a better idea of the surroundings.

Overall it was not a bad book. It was kind of entertaining, but I don't want to pick up the remaining two books of the trilogy.
